THE LOST POEM

I held it firmly
before I went to sleep last night —
this fledgling poem.
I was so certain
that even if I let it go
it would be there beside me
when I  woke up in the morning.

But it was not there
when I awakened
and though I searched my mind
it fled so well
it went beyond recall

I have my doubts
that I will ever find it.
It left its nest too soon
and fell into the void
where I’m unable to retrieve.
