RICE KRISPIES

Often
in the middle of the night
I awaken
to a whirling mind
containing many things
from troubled thoughts
to trivia
and so much in between.

Sometimes
these intrusions
insist I pay them heed
for longer than I wish.

Usually
I can make them leave
by going to the kitchen
and pouring out Rice Krispies
that “crackle, snap and pop”
just like they did
when I was very young
and took a daily nap.

I’ve started
taking naps again.
