When those we love
are carried away in the arms of death
and leave us only carrying memories
we may try to wear the mantle of gratitude
but we often weep.

No matter how colorful
we paint the lives
of those beyond the grave
they’re times when grieving pains
make claims upon our dailyness.

We sometimes fight the fading of our recollections
for we wish to savor what we’ve cherished.
