The squirrel
stood in the middle of the road —
stood still, as if frozen.
I hesitated for a moment
and then drew closer.

it darted into the woods
as if scared to death by my approach.

I wondered
how often it ran from perceived danger.
It likely spends its whole life being alert —
being tuned in to its fearsome world.
Being constantly aware of danger
is a way of life
for so many of God’s creatures.

And there are places in the world
where  humans also live
each day in constant fear.
