THE GESTURE

I’ve walked these country roads
for many years —
it’s the way I try to start my days
quite early in the morning.
And for the first time
a battered pick up truck
slowed down beside me
and a young man
ground his window down
and offered me a ride
to wherever I was going.
The gesture was brief
but its wake remained with me
for several hours
and evenĀ  joined
my evening prayers of gratitude.
