I woke up from a nap
one afternoon in October
arguing with the words of a hymn
I was taught many years ago
and had not sung for eons:
“You should never be discouraged,
take it to the Lord in prayer.”

“Don’t tell me how to feel!
Who do you think you are
giving me your shoulds?
I’m discouraged and damned tired
of this pain that I and many others
have taken to the Lord in prayer.
I’ll feel discouraged if I want to
and even if I don’t want to!”

I put that old hymn writer in his place
and felt some satisfaction
before sleeping a bit more.
