THE UNEVEN ROAD A CRADLE

I wait near new puddles
which settle here and there —
made possible because
the road’s unevenness
became their cradle
in the recent storm.
At this moment
their surfaces are smooth
because the rain has ceased.
But I hear thunder
and I suspect
they’ll soon begin to dance
just as they did
when they were born
not long ago.
