I SAT IN DARKNESS FOILED

When the power failed
I was sending e-mails.

“The would-be recipients of my concern
would be deprived.
They ’ll survive and so will I
but also, I’ll be unable to receive”.

I sat in darkness, foiled.

Then I rose and lit a candle —
not bright enough to read by
but bright enough
for me to savor quiet, pleasant thoughts
and think in ways
I wouldn’t have if I had had my way.
