What do you say at Christmas time
to your friends who are left
when your friends who have left
the world are steadily increasing?

What do you say when you know
that you’ve removed some names
that just last year were there
to receive your greetings?

It is sobering
to connect with those we know
and to be aware of the diminishing.

Some of us have to work at being merry
and we give it our best try
by being grateful to have known much love
that lingers, as if forever and forever.
