NATIONAL POETRY MONTH

Did you know that April is being celebrated

as NATIONAL POETRY MONTH?

I don’t know who decided this.

I was not consulted.

The quintessential magazine POETRY

likely played a part and

I once subscribed to it

but failed so miserably

in understanding what they published —

almost, but not quite as bad as

the poems in THE NEW YORKER.

In the daily writings of

THE WRITERS’ ALMANAC

I find what I need —

what I can grasp

and what nurtures me.

In my small world of sharing poems

I try to write in simple terms

where poetry seems to be

the proper medium to explore

the portions of the world

I wander through each day.

I’m often told I’m understood

and that alone encourages me

to write and write again

in a world where poetry

has so many nuances.
