I was surprised

by the magnitude of my awe

and whispered loudly: “GOD!”

as I stepped into the dawn

and faced a crescent moon

which floated in the east

and mingled with some clouds.

I did not mean that

the moon was God

or that

the dawn was God.

I felt speechless

and yet “GOD!” came  out of me

and it said everything needed

to convey what was within me.

Nobody heard it — but I did

early in the morning

when the day came gift wrapped

as it so often does.
