TALKING HEADS

I hear a lot of TALKING HEADS

as their sounds fill the air

and I am distant —

sitting in my recliner

waiting for my wife

to tell me who it is

and “what’s the news?”

When words flow

and you don’t know

the meaning of their sounds

(as if a foreign tongue made them)

you either try to understand

or turn your mind to other things

attempting to avoid the noise.

I have another option

available to some of us

but not to others.

We can remove our hearing aides

and claim the silence

we have come to know so well.
