I DON’T KNOW MUCH

If  I hadn’t been told

and believed those who told me —

or if I hadn’t read it

and believed the books

I’d think that the sun rose

most every morning.

If I hadn’t been told

and believed those who told me —

or if I hadn’t read it

and believed the books

I’d  think that the sun set

most every evening.

So it seems

I defer to knowledge

that far transcends my own

as I have done

for all my many waking years.

It can be proven, they say

that the earth turns

and moves around the sun.

But I could never prove it

for I lack the knowledge.

Even with a telescope

and a little trigonometry

I could never show you

how it really is.

And sometimes

I think that I don’t know

much of anything at all.
