I’M ONLY CERTAIN OF THE MOON AND SUN

Just before I went to bed
I looked out of a window.

Our lights were out.

I saw a yellow smile
about to settle in the west.

It made me smile.

I called out to the one I love
that she should also take a look.

And then I noticed just below:
a brilliant spot – a dot of light
that possibly was Saturn –
or possibly was Venus.
I used to know such things.

I had a little knowledge of the sky
that now has passed me by.

I’m only certain of the moon and sun
but even that may be undone
and I’ll be left with singing
“Twinkle, twinkle little star”
and I will wonder what you are.
