SELF PITY

I tried to pray away self pity —
tried to reason with it —
tried ignoring it —
tried to walk if off
and shrug it off.
It held on tight
‘til suddenly
on its own volition
it flew away
to find another heart
in which to work despair.
And mine
began to wait for gratitude.
