The first time I heard of
dealings with the elderly
I was just a kid.
I was informed that
the Eskimos put those who were too old
on an ice flow
and pushed them out to sea.
Back then I didn’t think much about old folks
and didn’t ’til some people that I knew got old.
Back then aging was a phenomenon
I paid little attention to until my parents
got gray hair and wrinkles and had retired.
I dismissed my childhood grasp
of Eskimo matters
and thought it likely was untrue.
But there are times the idea appeals to me.
Set me on some ice and I’ll go out to sea –
and eventually I’ll be free.
