STILL WELL ENOUGH TO CHOSE

While she sleeps
an early morning sleep
I write.

At night
when I begin my sleep
she reads.

There are these hours
when we go our separate ways
silently agreed upon.

And yet we can’t remember when
the pattern first emerged
to shape these days of being old
while we’re still well enough to choose.
