TWICE BLESSED

It may not matter to some of you.
Perhaps you eat too quickly
and do not notice
what is on the plates you eat from .

Or maybe you are in a hurry
because you wish to examine their surfaces —
which might be a good idea.

I’m not “talking” about food
but the colors and the designs
made to entice us imbibers
before calories are laid upon them.

Our latest acquisition features
birds and butterflies.

I love to eat their holdings
until I reach those winged creatures
that adorn the dishes that we eat upon.

But then at Christmas time
some competition gifted us:
pottery with hand prints of grand children
glazed upon its eating surfaces.
That, too, we must commend.

Again we find our food twice blessed –
before and after we consume.
