PRELUDES TO SLEEP

I suppose one is fortunate if
instead of worrying
he goes to sleep at night
considering weird agenda.

Last night after I hit the pillow
two thoughts dominated –
both in the context of
about a hundred years ago:

ONE: folks in the USA
were really getting into
owning flush toilets
and outhouses were diminishing.

TWO — women were about
to win the right to vote.

What really GOT me
about these two matters
is that my mother
who talked to me a lot
just before I lay me down to sleep
never mentioned
either one of these.

And I never thought to ask her]
when she was alive
when she could have told me much
about these things and never did.

I went to sleep, just wondering-
about a hundred years ago.
