MOST ANYTHING CAN GO WRONG

The sky above the bay is bright and gray
with possibilities of going either way –
might please a man with an umbrella
or an almost naked fellow unwilling
to be swimming in the rain.

And I, a man without plan don’t give a damn.
This nest in which I rest and eat and sleep
will keep us dry
no matter what the sky will strive to do.
As long as you are by my side, my love,
the firmament above our simple home
so high above the land and sea
need only heed our simple prayers
and spare us from the ravages of time.

That’s what I thought way back
when I assumed that fairy tales were real
and faith in God would keep us safe
no matter what the fate of others.

And now I sing a different song –
most anything can go wrong.
