The treadmill
I mount most every day
has finally called me
to look into its history.

Invented by a guy called Cubitt —
its purpose to punish prisoners.

They were forced to walk and walk
back in 1818 in England
and they were abolished by law
at the end of the century.’’

They resurfaced in the 1960’s
as a tool for fitness
and I a fool, fell in love with it
without questioning its origin.

Now I know its sordid beginning
but I embrace it as a dear friend
who has helped me immeasurably.
