SUN SET IN THE EAST

I watched the east at sun set
and saw the trees
begin to shed their gold
and take on shadows. —
the ones they’d wear all night.

The birds gave up their songs
but crickets soon began their own —
welcoming the dusk.

And I was soon to go inside.
I planned to take
the peace that I had found
and lay it on my pillow.
