EIGHT CATS IN CHURCH

I was sitting in a church pew
when this lady comes in
and sits in front of me
wearing a colorful jacket.

I began to examine her apparel
and in so doing saw two cats —
one on each side of her graying ponytail.
I’m  sure one of them winked at me.

When she stood to sing a hymn
I saw six more cats  below the others —
each with its own peculiar shape.

There were four hymns
and thus four opportunities
to take in the details.

At the end of worship
I asked God to be
merciful to a  sinner like me.
