A BROKEN PROMISE

It looked so promising.

it elevated my expectations

to be prepared

for a most unusual sunrise.

The east held thin clouds

close to its horizon

and they took on pink

as the earth turned.

Of course, I turned, too

and in anticipation of marveling

I stood still and waited.

But the spectacular did not occur.

Oh yes, dawn arrived

but its garments disappointed.

It did not wear beauty

but only a gray cloak

which masked its possibilities.
