My mind directed my legs
(with elevator help)
to the fourth floor
where I encountered a treadmill
ready for my access —
early in the morning.

My speed commenced at .1 miles per hour
and continued until it reached 1 —
and that proved to be quite enough for me —
a stranger to treadmills.

I couldn’t believe how fast
a mile an hour was.

How far I could go in a day
or week or month – or even year
at that speed!

But after 25 minutes
I had had enough.

And I was thankful
that I can walk at all.
