Just as the sun began to set
I went walking in our neighborhood
and passed the latest widow’s house.
I saw her sitting in the living room
alone and still.
I didn’t have the will to call on her
and offer my condolences
for I felt enmeshed in sadness.
Tomorrow I would go to church
to hear her man remembered
and later I would see another widow
in a funeral home
whose husband took his life
amidst much family strife.
Before arriving home
I walked by several other homes
where widows lived or use to live
and I was weary of the counting.
