Way back

we called it DECORATION DAY —

decorating the graves

of fallen soldiers and sailors.

It was always the 30th of May —

never changed

to help week ends flourish.

There was a parade to a cemetery

and there were speeches.

It was a day to give thanks

to  those who gave their lives

to preserve the rest of us.

I  don’t recall it being a day

when there were deals

and massive sale events

offered to those of us preserved.

Just think of what you can save

while shopping on Memorial Day!

I don’t recall when I first heard

The Old Gray Mare

Ain’t What It Used To Be

but I hum it to myself

on days like this.
