GETTING INTO THE PASTURE

If you are outside the pasture
and wish to get within
and there are strands of barbed wire
inhibiting your mission
be slow and careful
moving your precious body
between those parallel snaggers
that cows have learned
to respectfully ignore.
It is difficult but not impossible
to twist your body in such a way
that you evade  capture.
If your clothing can’t avoid
all of the barbs
it is possible to negotiate
and find release
by backing up slightly
and praying.
Then you proceed.
It is easier done when young
but even old folks can make it
if they are resolute
and do not like intentions foiled.
