ICE CUBES

Often when I ask: “How are you?
the recipient of my words responds: “I’m busy!”
That can be seen as virtue, I suppose.
There was a time
that I believed “ I’m busy”
meant that life was as it ought to be.
But now I want no BUSY in my life.
At the moment
I’m watching ice cubes melt —
growing smaller in my iced tea glass.
Their edges have been rounded
and they’re growing smaller.
By the time I go to bed
they’ll be diminished more
and in the morning
they’ll be just a little water in the glass.
Life is going fast
but I am trying not to hurry.
