When you hear bad news
and it’s not YOUR bad news
you may become pensive for awhile —
you may suspend some laughter.
But you will sleep as usual
and awaken to begin another day
quite possibly forgetting
the tragic information you received
just yesterday.
And when it surfaces once more
if it surfaces at all
it will have traveled some
from your parameters.

This does not mean that you’re indifferent —
but there are limits to your caring.
And, admit it:
there are likely many others
whose capacities for empathy
exceed your own.
