As the days are now beginning to lengthen
old folks need to be strengthened
for  they know their time on earth  is diminishing
and will find no increase —
at least on this earth..

They won’t share the world’s  miracle of new light
but are steadily and perhaps slowly fading.

Some folks are convinced that heaven awaits them
while some express their  doubts about what will be.

Some are certain that death is the final curtain —
that when they’re done they’re done.

Then there are those who choose
not to think of anything at all but “now”
and they seem existentially secure.

Then there are folks who weigh the options
and one day choose one
and the next day, another —
and the next  day another.

Maybe if we say MERRY CHRISTMAS loud enough
all such pondering will disappear.
