I had not seen vertical clouds

shaped like pillars —

until now.

I’m not writing about tornados

that stoop to the ground

but about a sunrise

that astonished my eyes

this morning.

Gothic pillars supporting beauty above

and below —

turning gold and white

before gradually changing shape

and then disappearing

before my walk was done.

There was no one near

with whom I could share this anomaly.

Your eyes on this page

is the best that I can do.
And so I’ll tell you:

after the pillars fled

the sky turned blue.
