WE DO NOT SEE THEM DISAPPEAR

At first count

there were sixteen ducklings

huddling close to their mother.

A few days later

there were eleven —

and then seven..

As they grew larger

their numbers diminished.

We did not see them disappear.

Was it the work of hawks or alligators

or some other carnivorous creature

that inhabits our world

where death proliferates and prospers

and which most of us

prefer to ignore?
